Coast Day 2021 will feature a combination of online presentations and limited in-person events in all three counties, carrying on Delaware’s coastal tradition throughout the state. In-person events will take place on Saturday October 2 and online presentations will take place on Sunday October 3.
The theme for Coast Day 2021 is storytelling and science, and in keeping with that theme, both the Coast Day Grade 5 Essay Contest and Instagram Photo Contest will both ask participants to show off their subject matter skills. of storytelling.
The Grade 5 Essay Contest will be a creative writing project that asks students to choose an aquatic animal that is native to Delaware and write a short story about what it is like to be that particular animal. The animal can be one that lives in the ocean, or in a pond, lake, river, or stream. Students should think about the habitat the animal lives in, what the animal can eat or do to survive, and what challenges the animal might face. Stories will be judged on the accuracy, creativity and development of the story. Registrations are due before 5 p.m. on Friday, October 1.
For the Instagram Photo Contest, participants are invited to create a series of photos that, when seen together, reflect the natural landscape of Delmarva and tell a story or tale about our ecosystem. For example, a series of photos showing the tidal cycle, or shorebirds landing and taking off on the beach. Regardless of the subject, submit at least two photos that when viewed together meet the requirements of the 2021 theme.
To enter, share photos on Instagram using the hashtag #DECoastDay and be sure to leave a brief description explaining the story behind the photos, how it relates to the theme, location, and other relevant information in the caption. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, September 29 at 11:59 p.m.
